Hey,
Somewhere in the Pacific right now, a container ship is crossing from Asia to North America. Its captain might be Greek. Its owner might be Danish. Its flag might be Panamanian. And a significant portion of its crew β the engineers keeping the engines running, the officers navigating the route, the ratings maintaining the vessel β are almost certainly Filipino.
This is not unusual. It is the norm.
The Philippines is the single largest supplier of seafarers in the world, providing around 25% of the global maritime workforce. For context: the next largest suppliers β China, Russia, Ukraine, Indonesia β each contribute a fraction of that share. No other country comes close individually.
How that happened, what it means for the Philippines, and what it means for global shipping β that's what this edition is about.
